Grayslake Schools May Ask Voters to Approve Tax

With families already reeling from high taxes, the Grayslake 46 School Board is looking ot join the ranks of other Lake County schools in asking for another tax hike. [Emphasis mine]

Grayslake Elementary District 46 board members were the latest to discuss the proposal Monday night, giving it mixed reviews. The board will vote by month’s end on whether to adopt a resolution in favor of a November ballot measure that would ask if Lake County’s sales tax should rise by 1 percentage point.

District 46 Superintendent Ellen Correll said at Monday night’s meeting she thinks voters should be allowed to decide the sales tax proposal. She stressed board members wouldn’t be backing a tax hike.

However, board member Jill Rohrer said she doesn’t want to be associated with a possible tax increase.

“It was very clear I was elected because people didn’t want their taxes to go up,” Rohrer said.

Board member Mark Hannan took an opposite position. He added out-of-town shoppers would pay toward the county’s base sales tax of 6.5 percent.

Following are the schools districts that want voters to decide on a 1 percentage point sales tax boost: Woodland Elementary, Zion Benton High, Waukegan Unit, Big Hollow Elementary, Grant High, Lake Villa Elementary, Millburn Elementary and Mundelein High.

I am not sure how Superintendent Correll can even say, voting to put a tax hike on the November ballot is not “backing a tax hike”. A referendum is a tax hike. A vote to support putting this on the ballot is supporting a tax hike.

Board Member, Jill Rohrer has is right. This is just a tax hike and families don’t want their taxes raised any more.

Mark Hannon’s comment about out-of-towners is plain ridiculous. From my understanding these out-of-towners only accounts for approximately 40% of the sales tax increase. The other 60% is still an increase on the residents of Lake County who already have the highest property taxes in the Midwest, which support the schools. Secondly, since we are on the Wisconsin border, this increase will just send more and more people over the border to make their purchases.

The Grayslake High District 127 had actually done the right thing for once, and voted to not support this tax increase. Since they overtaxing its taxpayers from their education and bond referendums from the past years, I was suprised at this move, but I do applaud them for this good decision.

Please call or Email The D46 School Board members and tell them to not raise our taxes anymore.
