LTE: School District Leases Car for Superintendent

There was a letter to the editor in the Daily Herald a couple of days ago. In it, the writer revealed that the St. Charles school board will be leasing a car for their Superintendent.

Car costs too much for school district

I was appalled to read in the Daily Herald last week that the St. Charles school board OK’d a new Toyota Camry for the superintendent.

Please explain why after the man is getting a $225,000 salary that we taxpayers have to lease him a car?

Which board members voted for this? I want to know who they are, so we can vote them out!

I thought we were running a school — $27,000 would buy a lot of books or even some computers.

Another example of how government bodies waste hard-earned taxpayers’ money.

The members of the St. Charles school board should be ashamed of themselves! What a disgrace!

I have to agree with the writer, this is a costly expense that should not paid. The money would be better spent on actual education. This is a perk the taxpayers should not be forced to pay for. Why should the taxpayers provide a car for this man when they are already paying him $225,000.

As a side note, if anyone has the actual contract I would like to see a copy. Mr. Schlomann was hired back in March. In addition you will notice that he gets a cell phone that will be used for both school business and personal uses. Just a reminder for those of you in St. Charles, you can FOIA the cell phone records to make sure the majority of the calls are business instead of personal.

On Monday , March 19, the School Board unanimously approved a three-year contract with Schlomann. According to the contract, his salary is $225,000. In addition, he will get an automobile allowance of $7,200 per year and the School District will reimburse the cost of a cellular telephone and monthly cell phone bills which he will use for both district and personal business, the contract states.

As a reminder this is the same school district that violated the open meetings act in 2005 giving their outgoing Superintendent, Barbara Erwin, 85 days of sick leave per year. That was a costly perk they are paying for as well. You can review articles about this debacle at the following links:
