Grayslake Elementary Facilities

I have just uploaed the board packet from the June 11th board meeting along with the facilities discussion presentation. It seems the administration is going back to the drawing board on the Avon and Woodview expansion plans. The plan to add space to these schools orginally took place in October of 2006. Articles about these discussion are in both the Daily Herald and the Grayslake Review. Excerpts below.

“With some modifications, we’re hoping we can spend less than that,” Grayslake Elementary District 46 Superintendent Ellen Correll said. “The four mobiles at Woodview were approved for five years, and we’re at nine. The board wants to find a way to get rid of them.”

District 46 has paving projects it wants to do at all of the schools, and roof repairs are needed at Meadowview and the Middle School.

That work, Correll said, could be done before winter break this year.

The district also wants to expand its administrative building to include the special services department.

“Everybody here at this table has always said the mobiles had to go,” said Board Member Jill Rohrer, adding that her concern has always been the cost. “To me, the No. 1 priority is the mobiles need to go.”

The previous board agreed in October 2006 to spend $5.6 million on the Avon/Woodview project, which would add three classrooms to Avon while renovating three other rooms, and eliminate the mobile classrooms at Woodview by adding four other classrooms onto the school.

Linder asked whether those two classrooms could be left alone and that two new classrooms and a multi-purpose room be added.

“That would save nearly $2 million,” Linder said.

Included in the facilities update is the the $8.1 million dollars from the 1999 Bond Authority. This si the same money that the board voted to abate $6.9 million of in October 2006 and then voted to keep in January 2007. This debate will be interesting to watch to see how that is resolved this time around.
