[...] The teachers unions use their money to buy influence in State Legislatures. They then use this influence to get mandates passed that either increase their membership, force district to spend more money on programs that are not their responsibility, combat school choice and generally prevent accountability to the parents and taxpayers. Some school boards even use taxpayer money to lobby for more taxpayer money by either giving money to a lobbying group or by paying for trips for students and teachers to the State Capitol to protest for more money.
Thanks for the response.

I am a firm supporter of funding each and every child equally. In fact, I support open enrollment so that the child can take that money to any school district in the state. Equal funding would make that more likely.

Harry, thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, there are districts here locally that also spend less than $5,000 per student and it still has been show that they waste money.

Until these downstate school districts start speaking out on the accountability and quality of education, they are going to be lost in the debate created by these large school districts. If you really want to help, then help us all hold every district accountable for both the money they spend and the quality of education they provide by getting the State to fund each and every child equally. This wil go a long way in stopping the over spending. It will also help every child to be educated at a higher lever than is currently being done.

I hope people realize that there are districts in the state that do their best to educate students on less than $5K per year per student. While schools in the Chicago suburbs pay their teachers up to $180K per year, downstate teachers with the same level of education and experience are making about a quarter of that amount. Schools in the Chicago suburbs have swimming pools and hockey rinks while the downstate schools are forced to use textbooks that are more than 10 years old. These greedy districts with out-of-control spending need to be made accountable. However, don't paint all schools with the same broad brush.

You are correct Bruno. We need to spread the word around this state for people to get involved. Apathy or the unwillingness to tell the truth about our broken education system only emboldens the broken education system. We cannot continue to go around the edges any longer and must attack this bureaucracy with a full frontal assault. We cannot play games with these people because they have the time, the resources and the students to hold hostage. We can only win by stop negotiated with them and go directly to the ballot box and start voting out the legislators who take the bureaucracy money and vote to give them more money without accountability. Tell your legislator that if they will not hold the failed education bureaucracy accountable, we will hold them accountable and remove them from office.

These people disgust me. Their greed knows no bounds.

IF there is one thing that people need to understand from your essay Lennie, it is that there is no fixing "education" from your district - particularly in terms of wastefull spending. The only fix is from Springfield, and both chambers need the Keith Richards treatment. (a 100% blood change)
