Anger Over Property Tax Increases

There are many residents in the Prairie Crossing area that are very upset about their property tax assessments.

When Bill Roberts saw the $3,000 increase in his annual property tax bill — to nearly $14,000 — he told his family they might have to cut back.

However, some of those tax bills have gone right through the roof this year, thanks in large part to a property assessment that jumped 18 percent or more for some houses.

The bills, which arrived a couple of weeks ago, sparked a flurry of angry, frustrated e-mails among residents and has the typically peaceful subdivision up in arms.

Still unclear in this case is how assessments were raised.

Fremont Township Assessor Ed Sullivan Jr. said he used data based on recent home sales and doesn’t know why Avon’s assessments were lower in the first place.

“For whatever reason, it was lower than ours,” said Sullivan, who’s also a state representative.

Avon Township Assessor Rick Dishman argued his assessments didn’t need to be raised.

“I thought my numbers were where they should be,” Dishman said.

Lake County Chief Assessment officer Martin Paulson said the county didn’t raise the assessments, but asked local officials to do it.

This happens everyyear about this time. Property value as contineu to rise in Lake County. The tax rate of the taxing bodies is making it harder and harder to live in the Grayslake area as well as several other areas in Lake County.
