Antioch Approves Everyday Math

Antioch District 34 approves Everday Math unanimously. According to the report excerpted below nobody spoke for or against the program before the board voted. Once again, this demonstrates how the apathy of parents and community members allows educrats to remain unaccountable in the decisions they make. By the time parents of these kindergartners realize the truth, the damage to their children will have already been done.

Beginning next year, students in Antioch District 34 will be taught mathematics using a system that is vastly different from how their parents and older siblings were taught.

It is called Everyday Mathematics and it focuses on critical thinking and problem solving rather than just basic arithmetic.

The new curriculum was unanimously approved Tuesday, about one month after the school board was first introduced to the program.

“I’ve had bad experiences with Everyday Mathematics, but the presentation we saw earlier made me feel very comfortable,” said board member Sue Buckley. “I want to be the first to endorse it.”

After the meeting, Buckley said her children had Everyday Mathematics while her family was living in a different state. She said she is confident the teachers in District 34 know what they are doing and will present the new mathematics program so it benefits all students.

One board member knows the problems with Everyday Math but still voted to approve it. Educrats are almost always to get board members to vote their way especially when no community members speak up.

District 34 has been using its current math curriculum for the last seven years. The new curriculum will cost $65,000 extra the first year and about $40,000 the following years.

It also will mean hiring a math aide to assist with the program. During the first few years, that position will be part-time, but will eventually become a full-time job.

Finally, here is probably the reason the educrats wanted this new curriculum; it requires additional staffing. This is what educrats today are about more often than not. They are increasing their numbers and their power.

  1. [...] Kevin Killion of the Illinois Loop alerted me to about how the National Council of Teachers is encouraging teachers to start teaching the basics in math. I wish this would have happened before the Antioch District 34 chose to start using Everyday Math. [...]
