Glen Ellyn District 41 Update

How ironic is the timing of this? Glen Ellyn District 41 has just hired a new Superintendent. The new Superintendent will be making 54% more than the outgoing Superintendent who made this statement a few days ago about why it’s legal to overtax the district taxpayers. The following quote is from the Daily Herald Opinion Section on this hiring.

Super-sized superintendent salary:

Glen Ellyn District 41 officials were patting themselves on the back this week for finding a new school superintendent. At a cost of $210,000 per year — a $74,000 or 54-percent increase — over the $135,910 that the previous school chief started at. This contract comes from a district that taxed property owners significantly more than what people were led to believe when they approved a ballot question in 2001. So is it that the large contract is affordable because the money is there from overcharging taxpayers, or is the new superintendent that good? Here’s hoping it’s the latter.

In case you are upset at this point, just remember, “They have to pay this much. It’s really for the kids.” Again, we can all see the money is not going toward the kids. It’s going to the bureaucracy.

  1. Actually, Barshinger started at nearly $170,000 in 2004 and Riebock’s
$210,000 puts her in the lower 1/4 of the Top 100 Superintendents. The data
reported in your excerpt is a little off.

Since Riebock was earning $193,000 in Township HS
Dist 113 and obtained some impressive results

    http://iirc.niu.edu/scripts/district.asp?districtID=340491130&test=all , I’d
say there’s a pretty good argument for "or is the new superintendent that
    good?"

While we’d all like to think that every penny
went to "the kids", it’s just not possible.  I’d say this looks like a
pretty good investment in "the kids".  You have to break a few eggs to make
    an omelet.

Julie, please discuss this with the Daily Herald staff. My excerpt is from them.

What is your definition of a good investment? This is from the report card in the link you provided.

Adequate Yearly Progress Report for 2005
    TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL DIST 113
Is this District making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)? No

Has this district been identified for District Improvement according to the AYP specifications of the federal No Child Left Behind Act? Yes

Is this District making AYP in Reading? Yes
Is this District making AYP in Mathematics? No

2005-06 Federal Improvement Status District Improvement
2005-06 State Improvement Status Academic Early Warning

This district is not making AYP in Math although they are in reading. They are on Academic Early Warning. I am not sure why you thnk this is a good argument.

Ahh, the press. Taking their word as fact is always a dicey proposition. Thank you for citing a more reliable source in the state report card, Julie. Interesting how the Daily Herald is used as a source, Julie calls out the accuracy, but she is the one who is told to discuss it with the Daily Herald. I guess if I were publishing information (via a blog), I would think verifying it would be my job and not something to be pushed off on others clarifying accuracy.

  4. Joe, the Daily Herald has a huge staff to verify facts. I assume most of them have been verified as such. If Julie, yourself, or anyone else feels they have erred in the reporting, they should take it up with them. I’m sure they will be happy to correct the information is it is found to be inaccurate. I can only verify what the data if they provide the source they used, which they did not. In that case it is better to speak with them.

I have sent corrections that I have found to the Herald and News-Sun before. Needless to say, I cannot catch every mistake they make. I do correct mine when they are made. I’m sure you are already aware of that though since you are a regular reader and commenter. I always provide my sources for your own verification.

  5. I found out more about this. They used the base rate from his original contract. They did not use what his actual take home was after the perks were added on and reported to the ISBE. We’ll have to wait until next year to see Dr. Riebock’s actual take home to see how it compares.
