District 34, Where Has the Tax Money Gone?

This letter to the editor appeared today in the Daily Herald. Brian’s question could be asked of any school district that is currently experiencing growth not just district 34 in Antioch.

Where has growth’s tax money gone?

I am writing regarding the upcoming vote for School District 34′s proposed referendum.

I am a single homeowner with no children. That being said, I have always realized the need to make our school system as good as it can be.

To that end, I have tried to support as many referendums, fund raisers, or anything else that I could. This time around though I am left with a terrible taste in my mouth.

I can only think back to the Wal-Mart debates and the new subdivisions sprouting up around Antioch like spring flowers.

Time and time again the powers that be told us that it would bring a ton of new tax dollars into our town, and a lot of that money would be going to the school districts.

Yet we are now being asked to pay more and more of our hard-earned money. If that really is necessary, I would love to know where that influx of new tax dollars went, and exactly what Wal-Mart has contributed to this dilemma.

This would be the accountability I speak of.

Please, people, lets get some answers and make an educated decision before we vote our hard-earned money away again. I suppose this letter is aimed at the school board and the village. If either would like to educate the public a response would be greatly appreciated and may even help you to get your wish.
