Election Interference?

In response to my post about “Who really paid for the Emergency Referendum?”, the following response was placed on the GoFlo website, Winthrop Harbor Schools, page 157.

Lennie,
Of course D1 paid for the election because it is the governmental entity that must pay for the costs. But, unlike the Beach Park [...]

D46 Board/Union Reach Deal

The District 46 Board and the Teachers Union reached an agreement Thursday night. This came with the help of the Federal Mediator who had originally brokered the tentative agreement back in Dec.

Months of tension in Grayslake Elementary District 46 over its teachers contract ended quietly when both sides agreed to resolve their interpretations of [...]

Vote of No Confidence

This appeared in the Daily Herald today:

The Grayslake Federation of Teachers union has taken a “no confidence” vote against the Grayslake Elementary District 46 board, the union said in a release sent late Thursday. The move further heats up the rhetoric over contract disputes that arose after the district board already approved terms. In the [...]

Grayslake Dist. 46 Support Staff Forms Union

The support staff here in District 46 are now forming a union. As you can see from the article below they are claiming this is because of the current dispute teachers’ union is having with the board.
The Grayslake High School District 127 support staff had formed a union last year. [...]

Not Yours To Give

As I stated yesterday, I would have a speech by Davy Crockett for you to read on the subject of Government Charity and the Constitution. Read an enjoy. If this doesn’t cause you to think twice about giving the government school more tax money, nothing ever will.

Not Yours To Give
One day in the [...]

Teacher’s Letter To The Editor

The following is a letter to the editor that ran in the Daily Herald:

School board must live up to its contract
As a District 46 staff member, I am privy to the details surrounding the contract issues, and I can therefore state that the staff would not have agreed to the contract as the board now [...]

Charity vs. Taxes

I am continually seeing arguments from pro-referendum people that we should be paying taxes for the kids. They say it is our duty to help out those less fortunate and to provide for the next generation. If you don’t agree with them on this you are called selfish, greedy and a “godawful right-wing-republican [...]

BOE Meeting Notes 2/6/2006

I am finally typing up my notes from the last board meeting. Please let me know of any additions or corrections. My pen ran out of ink right before the discussion of board goals. As always my comments are in [italics].

During the public comment seesion there were several parents of second graders [...]

Pension Obligations

CRAFT has a great article today written by Bill Zettler showing the pension obligations of the taxpayers of Illinois. I have a few excerpts below, but you should really read the entire article.

The top pension in 2005 was $357,800 as opposed to last years measly $314,000.
…In 2005 1,578 former state employees had pensions of [...]

Why The 65% Solution Is Not A Good Solution

The Thomas Fordham Foundation has a nice piece this week about the good intentions of the 65% solution and why it is a bad idea.

The ”65 Percent Solution”
A well-meaning young business entrepreneur has started a well-meaning organization called ”First Class Education,” (www.firstclasseducation.org) whose sole mission is to get states to enact laws requiring schools to [...]

Union Set to File More Grievances

The Daily Herald is now reporting the teachers union here is wil be filing grievances for over half the teachers employed by the district.

But now Lake County Federation of Teachers negotiator Arnavaz Mistry says a different health care issue could bump that number up to 150, more than half of the district’s 281 teachers.
Board President [...]

Unions, Common Sense and Rubber Rooms

John Stossel is continuing to turn up the heat on the Public Education System. In this installment he focuses on the Unions.

Bosses, have I got an idea for you: Don’t pay your best employees more, don’t ease out your least productive workers, and for crying out loud, never fire anyone, not even [...]

Teacher taking bribes

There is a teacher in Florida who has found a new way to make some extra money. He started taking bribes from the kids to sit out of his gym class. Emphasis mine.

(AP) A middle school gym teacher let children sit out his class if they paid him $1 a day, collecting perhaps [...]

Cooke Magnet

The parents of students at the Cook Magnet School in Waukegan are upset by a plan to force their children back into their neighborhood schools. These students had originally been heading for Abbot Middle School where they could continue in the gifted programs.

Parents said the change was a surprise to them while district administrators [...]

Chicago Matters Community Forums

Preschool for All

Gov. Blagojevich laid out his budget today. In it he wants to give schools $400 million additional dollars with $100 million to Chicago. He also wants to make Preschool available for all 3 and 4 year olds, which is estimated to cost $135 Million over the first 3 years. Read more about [...]

Monday Night’s Closed Meeting

On Monday night of this week there was a Closed Board Meeting. I have copied a comment from D46.info by Jen that needs to be clarified.

There was a board meeting last night–and I heard that members of the public were not allowed in the building.
What’s that all about? How respectful is it to hold [...]

Contract Misinterpretation Not Uncommon

Mike Riopell of the Daily Herald spoke with Kathy Lyons, who is a lawyer for the state’s Education Labor Relations Board. Read excerpts below or the full article here. Both the Board and Union have agreed to meet with the same mediator present when the original Tentative Agreement was reached.

Kathy Lyons, [...]

D46 Residents, Do You Want a Referendum?

Each day that passes I am more and more amazed at how the School Board is allowing the Teachers Union to continue to disseminate information that attacks them and places them at a disadvantage in the community. This contract dispute is being fought in the public whether they like it or not. It [...]

Property Tax Caps Were a Gimmick

There is a great Letter to the Editor in the Daily Herald today.

Any tax should be simple in explanation: execution and collection. The Edgar-Republican Property Tax Extension Limitation fails all three.
It was a designed to assuage homeowners who were seeing growth in taxable valuation outstripping the growth in personal income. The property tax is [...]

D 300 Fuzzy Math

I was looking the Advance 300 website tonight. I noticed the following chart in their FAQ section.

This group is trying to get people to approve 2 referendums totaling $185 Million. That is outrageous to start with. But the numbers above are any indication, these people trying to push the referendum [...]

Tax Abatement Talk Grows

After last weeks stories about all the games being played with the school bonds in the Grayslake school districts, you would think this article would be about giving the money back to the taxpayer. But, you are wrong. It is about abating bonds to attract commercial development so the schools can get more [...]
