CRAFT has a great article on new legislation that was started because of a media series on the hidden costs of tenure.
|
State Sen. Todd Sieben introduced legislation Thursday that he said will enhance school accountability and improve teacher quality. The Geneseo Republican said his legislation was inspired by The Hidden Costs of Tenure, an investigative report conducted by Small Newspaper Group that focused on accountability issues in the public schools. Small Newspaper Group owns The Dispatch and The Rock Island Argus. |
Here are the titles of the Series:
- Tenure frustrates drive for teacher accountability
- School boards lose power to fire poor teachers
- Firing Mr. Roth: $400,000 and counting
- Impact of poor teachers cripples students for years
- Student pregnant, DNA points to assistant principal; no firing
- High cost of firing teachers deters action by schools
- ‘Diplomacy’ undermines teacher evaluations
- Remediation falls short of ‘85 legislative intent
- Teacher unions’ clout keeps tenure strong
- Local influence adds to teacher-union power
- Schools resort to secret buyouts to get rid of teachers
- An editorial: Time to quit hiding costs of tenure
