Schools Rake in More Than Voters OK

The Daily Herald has an article today entitled “Schools rake in more than voters OK.” Their analysis shows how the Districts can legally raise more money than they told the taxpayer. They do this by being able to raise the rates that were already lowered because of the tax cap. See the excerpt below:

The tax cap causes tax rates to drop over time. When voters approve a tax-rate increase, school officials can raise most rates back up to their legal maximums — and then tack on the voter-approved increase. And it allows them five years to do that.

They also have a chart showing the actual cost versus what the voters were told in the districts they analyzed. Another chart show how the tax gap works and monies can be placed into other funds as well. This is a good representation of what I had been talking about with Distirct 46 and the increase being higher than what we were told.
